Superstitious Beliefs

Superstitious Beliefs

We all know that superstitious beliefs prevailed in our country and also the world when we studied them in our history books and in our daily life activities.

You might think that these beliefs are eradicated through education. But you are wrong people!!

Those beliefs got modified as you got throughout these ages. That’s true. Ever heard about “The lucky No: 8” and the “The unlucky no: 13” ?. Those are still in existence. In Western stock exchange markets where billion dollars are invested and trillion dollars are gained, an interesting fact tells us that there is a considerable loss of US$ 800 – 900 million on every Friday the 13th. People invest in less amount on this day. Weird eh..?

Even in our country, India, the land of hundred languages and different cultures the superstitious beliefs are still hitting the headlines. Recently we heard about Marriage between a man who was the bridegroom and a donkey which was the bride. They got married on an auspicious day in front of the village people all hailing for the well being of the odd couples. I wonder how they managed their honeymoon. I pray to God that the bridegroom should be safe from the kicks of his beloved bride. This happened in Southern parts of India and the reason for the interesting and strange occasion was to have a downpour for their village and the surrounding areas. It is an idiotic thing to imagine but that happened in reality and we should feel ashamed of our fellowmen being so irrational even though we provide them education and awareness about those beliefs through mass media.

We should take a look at Taiwan where there is a different belief about rice cookers. Taiwanese prefer green colored rice cookers than that of the red ones. Because , They believe that green color resembles health and wealth but the red ones resemble famine. The color superstition is opposite in case of Chinese people where they believe that red is the resemblance of their culture.

In south India, girls having their birth star Chittrai are considered inauspicious as they bring bad luck to their house and families. Even in case of twins, if both are boys it is considered as bad luck and if they are girls it is very auspicious. The true fact one should remember is that we don’t have rights , power, blah, blah to decide their lucks. People don’t accept this as they are human in nature and they will follow what others follow. They will believe what others believe.

Recently an Airline company The continental Airlines introduced a package which $888 in amount and the caption was “Lucky You”. This was done to improve their market quality and to attract more people to fly in their airlines. There is no surprise in that because people started buying that package and started to prefer that airline.

And one more interesting but shameful fact that happened in our country. It happened in Gujarat where there is a market named Lal market. Merchants shut down their shops for about two weeks after the holi festival , the festival of colors. They believed that their business will fall into crisis if they kept opened. About $1 million is lost on this auspicious (!) occasion. To prevent this, people had a wonderful idea. Am ashamed to tell you that they hired an astrologer and he did some rituals to wipe out that inconvenience. They kept the shops opened and they decided not to trade. They call it as THE SILENT BUSINESS but it ‘s very humorous to call it as The HAUNTED BUSINESS.

The Million dollar question that hits me and yours if you are rational is that “how did these beliefs still prevailing?? “

Is the current education system doesn’t play its part well? Or does the mass media propagates falsely?. I will say a big NO if you ask me the same question..

The reason is we have not yet prepared our minds to come out of those beliefs. We cling on them to console us, to console others, to make us happy, to make others happy, to curse our fate, to curse others fate..

I can roughly estimate that if I start telling about the superstitious beliefs that are prevailing around the world till now, it would take me two days to finish it. I don’t want to waste your auspicious time (!) that’s why I amazed you with some examples.

I don’t want you people to become atheists but believers of God who can think rationally.

There is much more things for us to discover, invent, innovate. But if we still remain swimming in the pond of superstitious beliefs and tasting it sweet water, we would never taste the salty water of the sea of rational thinking. The sea has abundant resources than the pond. Moreover nothing will decay in salt water but everything that remains in a pond will become a ditch one day. I will leave the decision to you people. You make it clear which will be the best for you.

We are not ready to let our minds to feed something rational. We would have been a 100% human if we ought to do like that. We should join together for another freedom movement but this is to free ourselves from the cages of superstitious beliefs.

Remember this line in your life till you die.

‘Life is not the moment of taking breath but it is the moment that takes your breath away’

So don’t let your life get wasted in believing these idiotic beliefs. It is like a cataract in our eye, a mirage in the desert. We have to operate it out, feel it as imagination to see the real world.
